Introduction :

The central, inescapable reality of the First World War is that over forty thousand men from Ireland - and hundreds from Newry - lost their lives, many before the age of 21.

None remain to speak about their experiences, yet ageing and fading photographs of young men in uniform remind us of the human tragedy.

Many did not live to marry, see their children grow, their grandchildren arrive.

Nor did they witness the partition of Ireland in 1921, the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the rise of Hitler by 1933, and the coming of the Second World War in 1939, a mere 20 years after the 'war to end all wars'.

Many never came home after the War but, through their written testimony, they have in a sense been returned to Ireland.

This is the story of some of those Newry soldiers whose wills have survived.
